In honor of the newborn Claudia Guay, I humbly offer my ignorant thoughts on baby fashion, as Ryan no doubt has more important fish to fry at the moment.

Well, things used to all olden and trippy like so. But that made the backs of baby's heads flat, and that was no good.

When Ryan asked to provide my insights to this blog of his, I was flattered, and slightly confused. I am not known for my fashion sense. I was also unaware it was still a trend to wear one's pants in this style that so infuriates Ryan. However, not one more day should pass on this blog without a reference to Daddymack and the Mackdaddy.

While this trend is no longer prevalent here in the fashion capital of NYC where I currently reside, I am happy to report there are equally abhorrent fads that will perhaps some day soon wind their way to Colorado. One particulary fascinating one is the so-called "Puerto Rican Pencil Beard". I really want to grow one of these myself, but if I tried to re-create these precise and delicate beard lines with my genes I would look like Ronald McDonald's Amish buttbaby. A silken doo-rag is also a timeless way to "stay classy", like the feller says.

The other thing about NYC is that it crawling with hipsters. This about sums them up.

Well, this is fun so far. Hopefully I can think of some more illuminating ruminations soon. See you all a little further on down the trail. And since Ryan said I could have "total editorial control", here is picture of an elephant peeing. I was going to put a picture of poop, but I didn't want anyone thinking it was actually my poop that I had taken a picture of. People do that kind of thing are sick, and I won't be mistaken for one of them.

500-Pound Man Rescued After River Ordeal

MILWAUKEE -- A 500-pound man injured while tubing down a shallow stretch of the St. Croix River was pulled to safety Tuesday by dozens of rescue workers who spent hours carrying him to a navigable part of the waterway.

Martin Rike, 39, of Pine City, Minn., was treated for chest pain at the Burnett Medical Center in Grantsburg on Tuesday morning and discharged that afternoon, his mother said.

Rike and three friends were floating down the river on the Minnesota border in inner tubes Monday afternoon when Rike's hit a rock and deflated, said Chief Deputy Steve Ovick of the Pine County Sheriff's Office in Minnesota.

Rike told the Star Tribune of Minneapolis that he went on his first tubing trip because of his doctor's suggestion to take up a fun but safe activity. But "the farther we went on the St. Croix River, the worse the conditions got."

He said he appreciated everything done to rescue him.

"Without those people, I would still be out there," he told the newspaper.

Ovick had said Tuesday morning that Rike was rafting alone, but after speaking with more rescuers, he gave the following account:

Rike's group called 911 shortly after 8 p.m. to report that he was having chest pains. A paramedic who arrived by helicopter stabilized Rike, but the pilot couldn't take him to a hospital, saying he was too heavy.

As many as 50 rescuers on the ground responded, with the first reaching Rike about 9 p.m. Crews tried to get to Rike with boats and canoes, but the watercraft ran aground in shallow water.

Rescuers tried loading him into an aluminum boat, hoping to carry him over the rocky ground. But he was so heavy that they could move the makeshift stretcher only several feet downstream per hoist.

Finally, rescuers created a floating platform by lashing three canoes together and placing four boards across them.

"That remedy worked much better, but it was still a lot of work," Ovick said. "They still had to drag those canoes all that way."

Rescuers finally got Rike to the ambulance about 8:15 a.m. Tuesday, more than 12 hours after the 911 call.

Rike wasn't in pain during the ordeal, said his mother, Sharon Rike.

"He got really cold because he was in wet clothes all night from being in the river," she said. "(Tuesday) morning, he was tired and hungry, but he was joking and trying to get warm."

Rike bruised at least one leg but was able to walk from the shore where he was stranded to the canoes, Sharon Rike said. Rescuers had limited his movement because he had symptoms of a heart attack, she said.

Even though Rike weighs 500 pounds, the truck driver is "really pretty healthy," his mother said. This was the first time he had tried tubing.

All right, call me an old goat, a geezer, an old codger, a curmudgeon, an Uncle Tom or any other unflattering name.

I don't care.

Let it be known, here and now, that I hate saggin' pants. I dislike being in the company of anyone wearing these buffoonish, self-loathing and effeminate getups.

You've seen the hip-hop style: pants three or more sizes too large that are worn below the behind, showing underwear, filthy flesh often in plain view.

Call me old-fashioned if you wish.

I have a lot of company. The Cajun town of Delcambre, La., (pop. 1, 700) recently passed an ordinance, which states: "It shall be unlawful for any person in any public place or in view of the public to be found in a state of nudity, or partial nudity, or in dress not becoming to his or her sex, or in any indecent exposure of his or her person or undergarments, or be guilty of any indecent or lewd behavior."

Delcambre Mayor Carol Broussard said of the new law and of saggers: "If you expose some of your privates - the crack of your behind - if somebody feels insulted, they should press charges. If you're offended by it, we want to straighten that out."

According to the Christian Science Monitor, Broussard is not alone. In many other parts of the country, school districts, city councils and mayors are fed up with saggers and are seeking questionable legal action, which I disagree with. Civic groups in Atlanta, Detroit and Birmingham, Ala., are organizing antisagging measures. A Florida senator hasn't given up on a bill to outlaw saggin' pants in public schools.

And the Rev. Diane Robinson of Jacksonville, whose effort I like, is handing out free belts through an initiative she calls "Pull Up Your Pants - Need Some Help, Here's a Belt!"

People who study such trends offer two main versions of how this subculture originated. One states that during American slavery, some white masters would rape their African male slaves, and after the criminal deeds were consummated, the victims were forced to wear their pants sagging so that their masters could identify them for future pleasures.

In other words, dehumanized black slaves wearing saggin' pants were said to be announcing that they were available for their white masters. Over time, the style became a little-talked-about subculture that seeped into general black culture.

The other version says the fashion developed in prison among black convicts. I quote Judge Greg Mathis of television's Judge Mathis show. He knows what he's talking about. He served eight months in jail when he was 17, and he has studied the saggin' phenomenon in his effort to understand some of the young men he would have to sentence.

"In prison you aren't allowed to wear belts to prevent self-hanging or the hanging of others, " Mathis said in the May 7 issue of Jet magazine. "They take the belt and sometimes your pants hang down. ... Many cultures of the prison have overflowed into the community unfortunately. ... Those who pulled their pants down the lowest and showed their behind a little more raw, that was an invitation. (The youth) don't know this part about it. I always tease and tell them that they better be careful because some man who has been in prison 30 years who comes home and doesn't know any difference may think it's an open invitation."

Despite his humor from the bench, Mathis is philosophical about saggin' and its deleterious impact on black males: "Young people have given up on society as a result of the obstacles they face. Instead of fighting back, they join the subculture of drugs and crime as a means of what they believe will uplift them from poverty. So you have this (interchange) of what is cool and hip in the 'hood and what is hip and cool in prison. You have a (revolving) door. ... I want to challenge our brothers to pull up their pants and lift up their head. ... We're no longer slaves. We are free to fight back, and that's what we must do."

The good judge is spitting in the wind. By all accounts, the saggin' craze grows stronger by the day. In fact, an increasing number of white, Hispanic and Korean males are adopting saggin'. The reality, of course, is that these white, Hispanic and Korean youngsters know when it's time to grow up and put away their unsavory low-slung wear.

Not so with too many young black males, who never grow up. They go to their untimely graves saggin'.

I am so sick of seeing some dude's boxers sticking out of his jeans. They waddle around like total idiots. I found this in the comment section of another blog; this was a guy’s response to a bit of criticism. Fucking brilliant.

"What's your problem that you need to talk down on how we ware our pants??? I bet your just jealous cuz you wern't as cool as we are today buy how we ware our clothes. I'm 18 and and ware my pants below my ass so my cool boxers can show. That's how everybody wares them today. Since everybody does it, its cool and unless you wanna look stoopid you'll ware your pants the same way. Unless your just stoopid. I can prove alot of you idiots who critacize us wrong that we're dumb by telling you that I make really good grades in school, even though I ware my pants low. See, todays kids can look cool and be smart at the same time. Can you say that about when you were kids? No. You just didn't think of the idea to ware your pants so your cool boxers could show and other people could see how cool they are. Plus, waring pants like this is COMFORTABLE!
